Portrait of Kevin McCarthy

Kevin McCarthy is an established West of Ireland painter living and working in Galway city. The paintings are bright, colourful and surreal-like; some originating in the local land/​​cityscape, others entirely imaginary with a contemporary/​political edge to them. The medium is oil on canvas built up over layers with thinned-down paint to create a final solid clear image.

Artistic career and exhibitions

Numerous joint and solo exhibitions in Galway and Dublin over the years. In 2005 exhibited artwork in the Thorbeckeplein Modern Art Market, Amsterdam.

A solo exhibition in 2008 in the Town Hall theatre in Galway was entitled ‘Melt’. Using large scale oil on canvas paintings, the theme of the show was climate change and the impending collapse of the housing market.

Exhibited twice in group shows in the White Room Gallery, Galway in 2009 and 2010 respectively as well as having permanent paintings on display there.

2016 – Solo exhibition entitled ‘Beyond the Pale’ – Galway 20/20 Gallery.

A member of Visual Artists Ireland

Since 1999 to present has exhibited paintings in St. Nicholas market in the heart of Galway city.

Kevin has a painting on show this summer in the 192nd RHA exhibition.
